If one were to ask about the greatest posse cut of the past five years, it wouldn't be surprising to see many fans throw Danny Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Earl's "Really Doe" into the mix. Stemming from Brown's acclaimed Atrocity Exhibition album, many have often wondered how such an epic and unexpected collaboration came to manifest in the first place. Last night, Danny Brown engaged with fans during a Persona 5 Twitch stream, and he proceeded to shine a light on some interesting behind-the-scenes insight into "Really Doe."

"Really Doe was me with two verses," reveals Danny. "It was never a posse cut. That was my song. That was never a song with a lot of people on it like that. But then one night I wake up, that's when I'm in LA mixing the album with Ali. And Kendrick send me a take and it's 'Really Doe'...I think when he did it, he wanted it to be me and him. That was his whole intention. So I'm like fuck it, whatever, but when I kept listening to it I was like 'damn.' He set up to body me kinda though. That's how I looked at it. I gave him a song I wanted him to do, and he [did a verse to 'Really Doe' instead]."
"I was hanging with Ab-Soul a lot then, and I was at Ab-Soul's crib, so I played him the shit," he continues. "Ab-Soul did a verse. That was cool, we put it together. But then Ab-Soul got mad at me cause he thought it was just me and him. When I asked him to do a verse to that beat, he didn't know Kendrick and Earl would be on that song. He got mad at me. On some funny shit. That [Do What Thou Wilt] song with Da$h, I was the verse on that shit! He cut me off and put Da$h on it."
"Everybody felt that Kendrick's verse should go last," reveals Danny. "To this point, people in the studio were saying Earl's verse was trash. That's the crazy part. I remember being in the studio and we putting that shit together and people telling me Earl verse trash. Kendrick verse need to be last. I kept listening to the song. You know me, I'm a battle rap fan, a rapper fan. I wanted this shit to be about sparring, and this n***a Earl bodied all of us!"
If that wasn't enough, Danny Brown also reveals that he and Kendrick have an unreleased track together, in which they both body an Alchemist beat with no hook -- while he doesn't have any plans to officially release it, he promises he'll play it for the fans one day. Check out the videos here, and sound off - do you agree with Danny assessment that Earl massacred the competition on "Really Doe?"
JPEGMAFIA Covers Carly Rae Jepsen In Short Film
JPEGMAFIA’s short film series “How To Build A Relationship” allows his loyal fan base to get a closer look at his life and creative process.
JPEGMAFIA, or Peggy, for short, has been slowly building up one of the strongest fan bases in the music industry, and he’s doing it organically. His most recent endeavor is a short film series titled How To Build A Relationship. Part 1 of this series was only 15-minutes long, but was jampacked with content. Most notable was the conversation with the fan-favorite Danny Brown – who spends most of the scene reminiscing how “cold” his bars used to be. The two of them discussed leaving a legacy and how being authentically themselves has helped them do so. The conversation happens over a few glasses of wine, so it is funny throughout.
The latest installment of How To Build a Relationship opens up with Peggy giving an autotune-heavy rendition of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” to hundreds of fans at what appears to be a sold-out show. Throughout the 25-minute episode, Peggy shares insight into his life and childhood. We see clips from several live shows intertwined with clips of him describing childhood photos. “I don’t know who dressed me in this shit, but… Why?“, he asks after sharing one of the photos.
The episode ends similarly to the last, but instead of talking with Danny Brown, Peggy invites another one of his musical inspirations, Lykke Li, a Swedish singer-songwriter. Again, the conversation is light and casual but dense in nature. The stand out might be DJ Dahi telling the Swedish artist that she’s singing “out of pocket”, which helped her realize the importance of vocal rhythms to a listener.
Danny Brown’s "Ain’t It Funny" Soundtracks New York Fashion Week Show
Danny Brown's music is officially high fashion.
Coming off the release of his latest and arguably most introspective project, uknowwhatimsayin? (2019), Danny Brown has earned his right to be considered one of hip-hop's most respected underground kings. Currently on the European leg of his 2019-2020 tour and recently unveiling a blossoming relationship with Rockstar that will immortalize the Detroit emcee forever, Danny Brown was pleasantly surprised to learn that his 2017 single "Ain't It Funny" was used during Christopher John Rogers Fall/Winter 2020 presentation at New York Fashion Week, this past Saturday (Feb. 8).
The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund-winning designer, Christopher John Rogers presented a total of forty different garments utilizing boisterous silhouettes, iridescent fabrics, and a color-coordinated lineup of models ranging in complexion, wearing natural hairstyles. The packed house was able to consume the designs to a very fitting soundtrack, curated by Skype Williams, which included tracks like FKA Twigs and Dennis Ferrer’s "Hey Hey," Eurythmics’ "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," SBTRKT’s "New Dorp. New York," and more.
The fashion presentation came to a climax as Danny Brown's "Ain't It Funny" instrumental was played during the show's finale. Christopher John Rogers himself took a moment to capture the models walking the runway in unison to the experimental beat his Instagram account. Yesterday evening, Danny Brown saw the clip on Twitter and simply quote Tweeted the video simply stating, "Ain't It Funny."
